Election Houses

At one time Tussey Mountain depicted where you would go to cast your vote, today all of our registered voters travel to the township building to vote for their favorite candidates.

Martin Hill separated the polling places of Southampton 1 and Southampton 3,           (I haven't found out what happened to #2). Although this election house is no longer in use, it still stands at the foot of Martin Hill in Beans Cove, the Carl Cessna family have restored it.  When it was closed the citizens used the Catholic Hall for a few years until the Board of Elections decided to send one electronic voting machine to our township which resulted in the consolidation.

Once inside one of these buildings you would find yourself in a small foyer with ballots tacked to the wall for the voters to review.   As you entered the larger room one of the workers would give you a ballet, then you would have to walk past the potbelly stove in the middle of the room to reach one of the small curtained cubbies where you could vote in secret.  When the Chaneysville election house was closed the Seniors Room at the rear of the Chaneysville Fire Hall was used for a number of years.
